A book covering apparatus (I) has a stand with twelve compartments (2) arranged in two rows. Each of the compartments (2) contains a number of book cover blanks (101). There is a specific book height value associated with each compartment (2), and each height value is colour coded. These height values are marked out using the colour codes on a guide (9) having a base plate and a stop plate (II). There are markings (20) indicating an alignment corner for a book (B) and colour strip markings (21) for the height values. Each book cover blank (101) is suitable for use with a wide range of book widths, but only with a specific height range. Each is stored in a particular relevant compartment (2) for its height. The user aligns a book (B) with the stop plate (II) to determine the height range value by checking the closest visible colour strip (21). He or she then selects a blank (101) from the relevant compartment (2) and proceeds to cover the book using this blank (10]). Because it has been selected according to the height range indicated by the guide it is a good fit for the book.
