The module (100a) has an evaluation unit (102) for evaluating picture data generated by a camera (101) for recognition of an operating gesture from a predefined set of operating gestures. The operating gestures are utilized for operator control of a home appliance (300), which comprises a control device (200) i.e. microcontroller, for function control separate from the camera module. An interface (103a) couples the camera module with the control device, and information according to the recognized operating gesture is transmitted to the control device via the interface. The camera is designed as a two-dimensional (2-D) camera or a three-dimensional (3-D) camera.
