A free-space sonar or radar-based sensor for localization of a target comprises a wide or ultra-wide band emitter, and a two-dimensional sparse array of spatially randomly or irregularly positioned receivers for receiving the wide or ultra-wide band signal after reflection at the target. Processing involves a matched filter, spatial bandpass filtering and the extraction of a signal envelope. The target is located in azimuth and elevation. Sidelobe / interference effects are overcome. |
