[Class 35] A totally-enclosed dynamo-electric machine is cooled by air circulated by a fan, the blades of which discharge the air to the region of a heat-exchanging part of the machine casing, after which the air is returned against a back pressure created by the fan blades through which the air then flows to escape via discharge outlets disposed at the fan centre. In the form shown, a fan 9 of the radial vane type is mounted on a shaft 3 and is arranged to discharge and compress the circulating air into an annular chamber 18 having a circumferential wall 19 which is an integral part of the casing 1 and which serves as a heat exchanger. After the discharged air has been compressed into the chamber 18 due to the centrifugal action of the fan blades 12, the said air flows back through the fan blades and escapes via a secondary discharge outlet 20 adjacent to the fan inlet passages. The air continues to flow around field coils 5 and over the surface of the armature and returns to the fan inlet via ducts underneath the commutator and the armature longitudinal air passages 17.
