Described is a method of producing an aqueous suspension of a noble metal colloid which involves reducing a noble metal salt in an aqueous solution using a functionalised water-soluble quaternary ammonium salt in the absence of organic solvents to form elementary nanoparticles, wherein functionalisation of the water-soluble quaternary ammonium salt involves the presence of at least one reducing group such as -CHOH or cyclohexenyl, preferably in combination with at least one bulky group selected from Calkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl or aryl. Described is a method of producing a noble metal catalyst on a substrate, which involves bringing the described suspension into contact with a substrate material and separating the catalyst with the noble metal. Described is a method of producing 3-hexenol, which involves reducing 3-hexyn-1-ol in the presence of a colloid suspension obtained using the method described above.
