PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antimicrobial composition used in a functional fluid such as a paint, adhesive, sealant, coking material, mineral and pigment slurry, printing ink, agricultural pesticide and domestic product.SOLUTION: An antimicrobial composition includes an isothiazolinone, for example 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one, and a zinc compound selected from a zinc salt, ZnO, Zn(OH)or a combination thereof. As a useful zinc salt, for example an oxide, sulfate, chloride and a combination thereof are provided. When Zn from such a zinc compound is used, Zn increases antimicrobial activity of an isothiazolinone containing compound. Such increase enables achievement of preferable antimicrobial activity at a lower isothiazolinone concentration than when using isothiazoline in the presence of no zinc compound. Then, the antimicrobial composition may contain a subsidiary biocide such as a pyrithione, for example zinc pyrithione or copper pyrithione. |
