PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing an organic compound that efficiently progresses a dehydration reaction in water which is an equilibrium reaction, concerning production of an organic compound by dehydration reaction in water of a water-soluble reactant.SOLUTION: In a method of producing an organic compound by dehydration reaction in water of a water-soluble reactant, a dehydration reaction is carried out in the presence of a solid polymer electrolyte having a metal salt of a sulfo group (-S(=O)OH) or a strongly acidic functional group whose acid dissociation constant pka in water is ≤2.0, and which is selected from some of a carboxyl group (-COOH), a hydroxyl group (-OH), a phosphono group (-P(=O)(OH)), a sulfonylimide structure (-SO-NH-), a sulfonylmethido group (-SO-CH(R)(R)) (Rand Rwhich may be the same of different each represent an organic group excepting a hydrogen atom). As the metal salt of the strongly acidic functional group, an alkali metal salt of a sulfo group is preferable. An especially useful dehydration reaction is an esterification reaction using water-soluble carboxylic acid and water-soluble alcohol as reactants. |
