Disclosed are a fault handling method, device and system for a virtual private local area network, which relate to the technical field of network communications, and can solve the problem of bandwidth waste of a VPLS network because a CE connected to an IVSI at the other end still transmits data to the VPLS network when a CE connected to an IVSI at one end cannot be accessed in a network. The method comprises: the relay virtual switch instance sending a fault notification message to a backbone network component virtual switch instance at an opposite end, the fault notification message carrying a common service instance tag of the service instance component virtual switch instance at this end and the service instance component virtual switch instance at the opposite end; and the backbone network component virtual switch instance at the opposite end receiving the fault notification message, and according to the service instance tag carried in the fault notification message, closing the service instance component virtual switch instance at the opposite end.
