The present invention pertains to a hybrid excitation-type rotating electric machine, and the purpose of the present invention is to form a desired magnetic circuit without increasing the size. In order to achieve said purpose, the present invention is provided with: a rotor having a first and second rotor core which are separated with a space therebetween in the axial direction, and in which first magnetic poles excited by means of a permanent magnet and second magnetic poles not excited by means of a permanent magnet are both alternately disposed in the circumferential direction of the first and second rotor cores, the polarities of the first magnetic poles are different from one another, and the first magnetic poles of one of the rotor cores and the second magnetic poles of the other rotor core are disposed facing one another in the axial direction with the space between said first and second magnetic poles; a stator disposed facing the outside of the rotor in the radial direction with an air gap between the stator and the rotor; and an excitation coil which is secured to the stator, is disposed within the space by protruding from the stator toward the inside in the radial direction, and excites the second magnetic poles. The axial direction position of an axial direction edge part toward the second rotor core at the radial direction outer edge part of the first rotor core is on the opposite side of the side where the second rotor core is present in the axial direction relative to the axial direction position of the axial direction edge part of the excitation coil toward the first rotor core, meanwhile the axial direction position of an axial direction edge part toward the first rotor core at the radial direction outer edge part of the second rotor core is on the opposite side of the side where the first rotor core is present in the axial direction relative to the axial direction position of the axial direction edge part of the excitation coil toward the second rotor core.
