Expandable shaft (la, lb) provided with an entrainment shaft (2) and a shell (3) rotatably fitted over the entrainment shaft (2) and extending substantially for the entire length thereof. The shell (3) comprises openings (13) through which elements (20) can protrude for removably locking the core (4) of a reel that can be fitted over the shell (3) and means (6) are further provided of activating the elements (20) by way of mutual rotation between the shell (3) and the entrainment shaft (2) in contrast with the action of elastic means (12) which act between the entrainment shaft (2) and the shell (3). The activation means (6) comprise a ramp on which a respective removable locking element (20) slides, entrained by the corresponding opening (13) with the aforementioned mutual rotation, so that the removable locking element (20) is moved radially in the opening (13) by the ramp according to the mutual position between the shell (3) and the entrainment shaft (2).
