The present invention provides methods for treating cancer in a subject suffering from cancer that comprise infecting the subject with a bacterial cell that contains an exogenous nucleotide which increases production of a bacterial effector by the bacterial cell, and methods for preferentially reducing actin polymerization in tumor cells in a subject compared to non-tumor cells in the subject that comprise infecting the subject with a bacterial cell that contains an exogenous nucleotide which increases production of the bacterial effector by the bacterial cell. The present invention also provides compositions that comprise a bacterial cell that expresses an exogenous nucleotide which increases production of a bacterial effector by the bacterial cell, and composition that comprise a bacterial cell that expresses an exogenous nucleotide which increases production of a bacterial effector by the bacterial cell for use in the treatment of cancer in a subject suffering from cancer.
