Provided are: a roller which does not make uneven contact even if subjected to excessive moment; and a rolling guide device in which such rollers are mounted. A roller has a single rotation axis. The cross-section of the roller taken along the rotation axis is substantially hourglass-shaped in such a manner that the diameter of the roller is reduced gradually along the rotation axis from both end surfaces of the roller in the axial direction. Both end surfaces are provided with recesses which are formed along the rotation axis.
