Disclosed is a cutting tool having excellent welding resistance and abrasion resistance. Specifically disclosed is a cutting tool (1) which comprises a base material (2), a coating layer (6) which is coated on the surface of the base material (2) and comprises a material represented by formula Ti a Al b Nb d M e (C 1-x N x ) (wherein M represents at least one element selected from Si, W, Mo, Ta, Hf, Cr, Zr and Y; 0.1‰¤a‰¤0.7; 0‰¤b‰¤0.8; 0.02‰¤d‰¤0.25; 0‰¤e‰¤0.25; a+b+d+e=1; and 0‰¤x‰¤1), a cutting face (3), a flank face (4), a cutting blade (5) which is arranged between the cutting face (3) and the flank face (4), and droplets (7) which are formed on the surface of the coating layer (6), wherein the flank face (4) has, formed thereon, finer droplets (7a) having particle diameters of 300nm or less in a larger amount than that on the cutting face (3), and the average chemical composition of each of coarser droplets (7b) which have particle diameters of 1000nm or more and are formed on the flank face (4) has a higher Nb content than that in the average chemical composition of each of the coarser droplets (7b) formed on the cutting face (3). |
