The method involves determining alternative route for route sections that are not yet passed through the vehicle, if predetermined deviation on specified route of vehicle satisfies predetermined condition, so as to reduce the probability of selecting each alternative travel route section. The alternative route is determined by selecting the alternative travel route sections from candidate sections and using cost parameter adapted for the route sections in the context of given quality criterion. The route guidance is performed by considering alternative route as specified route. An independent claim is included for a navigation device.
