PURPOSE: A device and a method of charging a portable terminal determine a variety of mobile devices through a single USB terminal. CONSTITUTION: A charging device of a portable terminal includes a power unit (100), a USB terminal (200), a USB line control unit (300), and a central processing unit (400). The power unit provides power for charging. The USB terminal is connected to an external portable terminal. The USB line control unit varies a charging voltage according to the portable terminal connected to the USB terminal. The central processing unit controls the operation of the USB line control unit by determining the portable terminal connected to the USB terminal. If the portable terminal is connected to the USB terminal, the type of the portable terminal is determined by checking the voltages of a first terminal and a second terminal through a monitoring terminal.
