PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator and an optical modulation method, capable of obtaining an optical damage suppression effect by ultraviolet radiation with low irradiation intensity.SOLUTION: The optical modulator includes: an electro-optic crystal whose refraction index varies by applying an electric field; a first light source for emitting light from the front face of the electro-optic crystal; optical modulation means for applying the electric field between the top face and the undersurface of the electro-optic crystal to modulate the light penetrating from the front face of the electro-optic crystal to the back face thereof; a second light source for irradiating the electro-optic crystal with ultraviolet radiation; and diffusion suppression means for suppressing the diffusion of the ultraviolet radiation in the electro-optic crystal. |
