The purpose of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display device that excels in viewing angle characteristics, does not generate reddish discoloration in a polarizing plate, and has display image quality that does not deteriorate. The liquid crystal display device of the present invention has, in the following order, a first polarizing plate, liquid crystal cells, a second polarizing plate and an LED backlight. The liquid crystal cell (20) has a first and a second substrate (110, 120) and a liquid crystal layer (130) that contains p-type nematic liquid crystals. A first electrode (112) and a second electrode (113) are disposed on the first substrate. When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystals near the first substrate (110) are oriented obliquely to the surface of the first substrate, and the liquid crystals near the second substrate (120) are oriented perpendicularly to the surface of the second substrate. At least one of either the first polarizing plate or the second polarizing plate has, on the liquid crystal cell side, a protective film that includes cellulose ester with a moisture permeability of 150-900g/m2 ° 24h at 40°C, 90% RH, measured according to JISZ0208.
