<p>A microneedle device comprises an engine 210 which actuates an array of needles 220 to reciprocate or oscillate between an extended, exposed skin-piercing position and a retracted, concealed position relative to a housing, the needles being in its extended for period of time which is less than its retracted position, to reduce the possible breakage of skin in use. The driving mechanism may comprise a flattened portion 272 of a rotating cam 270 which allows an arm to be urged downwardly by a spring 242. Alternatively, driving mechanism may comprise a rotating pivot link (fig 1), an eccentric cam (fig 2), a Scotch yoke (fig 4), pairs of pivoting linked arms which rotate and reciprocate (figs 5 & 6), a driven cog wheel with a portion of missing teeth or a driven cog wheel selectively engagable with a toothed rack (figs 7 & 8).</p> |
