The invention is directed to a process for the lactonization of carboxylic acids, wherein unsaturated carboxylic acids comprising 10 to 24 carbon atoms are reacted in the presence of a salt of fluorinated alkane sulfonic acid at temperatures between 100 °C and 200°C.
