Bending machine with a safety device and method for operating such a machine

The machine (1) has pivoting joints (6, 7) aligned concentric to one another and parallel to a workpiece support surface (4). An optical monitoring unit (21) monitors pivotal movement of a bending cheek (5), and comprises an optical transmitter (22) for emitting control beams (24-26) i.e. band shaped radiation beams. The transmitter and a receiver (23) of the pivoting joints are assigned such that the control beams extend between the transmitter and the receiver around the pivot joints forming an envelope cylinder. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a bending machine.
