A door 210 which may be a tailgate for an automobile (200, Figure 2) comprises canopy 100 that is operable to move between at least a retracted position and an extended position in which the canopy extends away from the door in order to provide shelter. The automobile (200) may comprise a storage compartment, access to which is gained via hinged door 210 comprising first and second portions (220, 230, Figure 2). Preferably when disposed in the retracted position, the canopy 100 is housed wholly within the second portion (230). A surface (234, Figure 3) of the first portion (220) defines a bottom edge of the door 210 and is provided with an elongate rectangular slot (233, Figure 3). When disposed in the extended position, the canopy 100 extends from the door through the elongate slot (233). Optionally the canopy 100 comprises a substantially rectangular sheet 110 of flexible material. One edge of the sheet 110 of material may be attached to a spring loaded roller (120, Figure 3) which may be rotatably mounted in the second portion (230). Preferably an opposite edge of the sheet 110 of material is attached to an elongate strip 130 of rigid material. The canopy further comprises two rigid, elongate rotatable arms 140. |
