For addition to a green fodder to be stored in a container such as a silo there is employed an agent which suppresses formation of butyric acid but promotes lactic acid comprising a water-soluble nitrate, e.g. sodium or calcium nitrate and an aluminium salt of formic acid. For better distribution over the fodder the agent may be mixed with an inert substance such as kieselguhr or with a salt having a strong osmotic action exemplified by sodium or ammonium chloride. Examples are concerned with adding a mixture of sodium nitrate, aluminium formate, sodium chloride and ammonium chloride to a blend of equal parts of plants of peas and vetches cut before flowering and with adding a mixture of sodium nitrate, formic acid-aluminium triformate (HCOO)3 A1. COOH and sodium chloride to a blend of after clover and grass. |
