PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the position coordinate of a road marking by generating an image including the road marking from images of road surface photographed while being traveled on a road. SOLUTION: In the road marking map generation method, the road surface is photographed with a video camera while being traveled on the road and the position coordinate of each photographing point is obtained with a GPS or the like. A computer converts each frame image of the moving image to create an orthographic image in the state of being viewed from directly above and places it at the photographing point to create a connected image along the running path. Also, the computer creates a wide road image by combining connected images of different paths. In this road image, when the connected images overlap each other and the road marking A153 of a lower connected image is concealed, a transparency polygon POL15 is automatically set on such portions. Thus, by making effective use of the road marking included in each connected image, a road image can be created, and the position coordinate of the road marking can be easily obtained.
