The method involves reading an information about a height of a load carrying medium (12) when an industrial truck is last turned off, where the information is stored in a non-volatile memory. The information of the current height is determined based on the read information and a switching state of a switching element (18). The switching state changes when the load carrying medium passes a specified height. An independent claim is also included for an industrial truck.
