A sample containing luminescent particles is prepared and absolute or relative photoluminescence quantum yield of the sample is determined. The absorption cross section or absorption efficiency of the particles in the sample is determined and the absolute brightness of single particle is determined based on the determined absolute photoluminescence quantum yield, absorption cross-section, or absorption efficiency, and the number of particles.
