<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of improving operability of a person who makes image quality adjustments and easiness of confirmation of adjustment effects, and a control method thereof and the like. <P>SOLUTION: A difference calculation unit 107 calculates average values of differences in luminance between an input image signal 111 and an image signal output from an image quality adjustment unit 106 for display candidate areas. An OSD display area determination unit 108 determines an area where an OSD image is to be displayed among the plurality of display candidate areas on the basis of the average value of the differences in luminance for the display candidate areas output from the difference calculation unit 107 when an image quality adjustment value monitor unit 104 detects variation in pixel adjustment value. An image synthesis unit 109 synthesizes the OSD image generated by an OSD image generation unit 105 together such that the OSD image is superimposed on the image generated from the image signal output from the image quality adjustment unit 106 in the area determined by the OSD display area determination unit 108 in the image.
