[Also in Group V] The annular casings of the cells of a primary battery in which the cells nest one within another as described in Specifications 549,036 and 617,669, are made of a thermoplastic material such as bitumen or wax which is capable of flow in the completed battery so that the joints between the cells are proof against leakage of electrolyte. The casings may be made by dipping a tool shown in Fig. 1 into liquid bitumen or wax. The tool comprises a brass block 1 the lower end of which, is shaped to give the required inside dimensions of the casing which is stripped from the block after it has been removed from the liquid bitumen &c. The lower part of the block is hollow to provide an opening in the bottom of the casing. Cooling water may be circulated through pipes 5, 6 and a closed chamber 3. A zinc plate may be moulded in the bottom of the casing by temporarily attaching it to the bottom of the block by means of a vacuum provided by a pipe 7. The greater part of the under surface of the zinc plate is protected from contact with the bitumen by a spring- pressed pad projecting upwards from the surface of the bitumen. |
