<p>A retracting safety barrier 1 is raised and lowered by a linear drive arrangement of the carriage and rail type, the carriage 10 being coupled to a drive source and a railing 8, 9 being coupled to the carriage 10 by a damped double acting mounting 13 incorporating a safety cut-out arrangement for disengaging drive to the carriage 10 should the movement of the carriage 10 relative to the railing 8, 9 exceed a predetermined amount when the barrier 1 engages an obstacle. The damped double acting mounting 13 may include two pressure switches 22, 23 acting in opposite vertical senses, the switches 22, 23 being mounted between three plates 14, 18, 19. The mounting 13 may be damped by compression springs (20, 21 fig. 9) located between the three plates 14, 18, 19. The barrier 1 may comprise first and second horizontal members or railings 8, 9 coupled to respective carriages by damped double acting mountings. The barrier 1 may include vertical, telescopic members (3, 4 fig. 1) including members 6, 7 connected by the railings 8, 9. The barrier 1 may be used in a combined stairway and lift installation.</p> |
