The method for operation of a navigation system (100) of a motor vehicle in which geographical position data are determined from a locating system (14) and transferred to a data processing device with access to a digital map (16). The location of the vehicle is then determined on the map so that a driver can be visually or acoustically informed. Prior to a journey the driver enters a selected route into the navigation system where it is stored in route memory (32). An independent claim is made for vehicle navigation system with an integrated route memory that can store a route as a driver passes along it.
