The present invention describes a nano and micro composite material based on resin, polyester, clay and reinforcing charges of calcium carbonate and fibreglass, which avoid the spread of fire without releasing toxic substances in the environment. The invention avoids the spread of fire according to the standard ASTM D5048, in which a flame of 125 mm of height is directly applied to a plate of the nano and micro composite material of the present invention. For that purpose, the clay must be chemically modified with a primary amine of from about 8 carbons to about 20 carbons. The modification of the clay is performed in an aqueous acid phase in hot. The composite material is prepared by initially mixing the resin with the clay and the amine, then adding the curing agents and impregnating the fibreglass mat for subsequently performing the crosslinking reaction at room temperature. The flame test is performed in a plate of 17 x 17 cm, applying at least 45 minutes of intermittent fire each 5 seconds, as established in the standard, in this time, the flame shall not be spread in the plate and must resist at least twice the time indicated in the standard. The mechanical resistance of the nano and micro composite material must be higher than that of the polyester resin cured without the reinforced charges.
