PURPOSE: Scoparone (6,7-dimethoxycoumarin) significantly suppresses the development and the proliferation of cancer and effectively controls the expression of cell proliferation related elements, so that a composition including scoparone can be used as medical or food products that are useful for the prevention, treatment and improvement of cancer. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating cancer contains 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The cancer is prostate cancer or breast cancer. The composition suppresses the phosphorylation of STAT3. The food composition for preventing and improving cancer contains 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin.
