PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a terahertz generating element which can improve a ratio of exciting light contributing to the generation of a terahertz wave pulse.SOLUTION: A terahertz generating element for generating a terahertz wave by irradiation of exiting light 8 includes an exciting light absorption part 2 made of a semiconductor having a smaller band gap than energy corresponding to a wavelength range that the exciting light has, and having a reference surface which is determined considering an irradiation direction of the exciting light. The exciting light absorption part 2 has a stair shape part 3 in which a plurality of stair-steps 4, 5, 6 and 7, which have different distances in step-wise in a vertical direction with respect to the reference surface and have respective planar surfaces parallel to the reference surface, are constructed ranging via a side face connecting between planar surfaces having different distances. |
