The method involves establishing a normal operation curve associating respective intensities of an electrical current in an actuator (20) with different positions of an element i.e. throttle valve, moved by the actuator, where the intensities represent a normal operation of the actuator. Real intensity of the electric current is measured in the actuator, and real position of the element is measured. State of the actuator is determined by comparing the real intensity of the current and the real position of the element with the normal operating curve. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining state of an actuator of a vehicle.
