<p>A process for the preparation of 1,3:2,4-bis(4-methylbenzylidene) sorbitol (MDBS) and 1,3:2,4-bis(3,4-dimethylbenzylidene) sorbitol (DMDBS) via a dehydrocondensation reaction is disclosed. The reaction is carried out between an aldehyde and an alditol in a mole ratio of 2:1 wherein ionic liquid is used as the acidic catalyst and/or reaction medium. The ionic liquid used in the process is quaternary ammonium salt based ionic liquid.</p> |
