The present invention relates to the use of L-carnitine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof for the treatment of hypertension, for the reduction of systolic blood pressure or pulse blood pressure in pre-diabetic patients. The invention also relates to the use of acetyl-L-carnitine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof for preparing a medicament for the treatment of hypertension in pre-diabetic subjects.
