Disclosed is a utility meter (120a) for detecting invalid nodes in a mesh network (105). The meter (120a) includes at least one of each of a memory (132), a processor (130) and a network interface device (134). The at least one network interface device (134) is configured to facilitate communication over a mesh network (105). The memory (132) is configured to store a routing table (140) having information associated with one or more devices (120b, 120c, 120d, 120e, 120f) in communication with the utility meter (120a) via the mesh network (105). The processor (130) is configured to identify a change in the routing table (140) and generate an alert message based on this change. The alert message is communicated to a central controller (110) which processes it to identify an invalid node within the mesh network (105).
