Each primary IED (210) has a respective configuration file (270). The system (200) also includes communications arrangements (240, 250) enabling communication by at least one of the plurality of substation devices, including enabling communication by at least one primary IED (210). The system (200) further includes at least one backup configuration file (280) for each configuration file (270). The backup configuration file (280) is stored on a backup IED (290). In response to a primary IED (210) ceasing to be in an active state, at least one of the plurality of substation devices activates the backup IED (290) with the backup configuration file (280) corresponding to the inactive primary IED (210). The backup IED (290) to activate is selected as the one having stored thereon a backup configuration file (280) corresponding primary IED (210) that ceases to be in an active state.
