[Also in Group XXXIV] A repair patch for rubber or rubberized articles such as pneumatic tubes, fabrics, shoes and coats, comprises a main body 1 of rubber having attached to one side only thereof a connecting rubber layer 3 which extends beyond the periphery of the body 1 to form a flexible rim 4 between the edges 2 of the body and the article. The body 1, Fig. 1, has tapered edges 2, and the connecting layer 3, which may differ in colour from, and has a larger coefficient of elongation than, the body 1, is protected by a removable cover 11. The upper surface of the patch may have a removable translucent cover layer 1a which supports the rim 4 when the patch is applied. For cold vulcanization the body 1 consists of vulcanized rubber, and the connecting layer 3 may either consist of unvulcanized rubber containing sulphur and accelerators, or may consist of unvulcanized rubber to which sulphur must be added before use. In a modification shown in Fig. 7, the body 1 comprises a pyramid of unvulcanized rubber layers 12, 13, 14 cemented together and superposed on an unvulcanized connecting layer 15 having a rim 16, the patch being applied by hotvulcanizing to seal the damaged area as in Fig. 6. The body 1 of the patch may comprise one or more cord layers and for a patch diameter of 4-6 cms. the connecting layer may have a thickness of 0.2-0.4 mm. |
