The device has a power supply supplying power to heat a tooth flank of a gear wheel, where a part of the power is transferred to an edge of another gear wheel in a contact region, so that the wheels are cooled before heating the flanks in the contact region again. The edge of the latter wheel is warmed up in the contact region by transferring heat. Infrared and/or temperature images of one or both flanks in the contact region are received by an infrared camera when local cooling or heating of the surface portions of the flanks, where the images corresponds to contact reflections of the flanks. An independent claim is also included for a method for non-destructive analysis of contact reflections of tooth flanks of gear wheels.
