The device (100) has a control unit actuating opening and closing of a switch (S1) while a pole terminal (P2) i.e. negative potential, of an intermediate circuit capacitor (Z) is decoupled from first- and second load terminals (V2, V3), where the switch connects another pole terminal (P1) i.e. positive potential, of the capacitor with a third load terminal (V1). The former pole terminal is connectable with the first load terminal by another switch (S2). The control unit enables opening and closing of the latter switch while the latter pole terminal is decoupled from the third load terminal. The switch is designed as a high volt switch such as insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) or MOSFET. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an intermediate circuit (2) a method for operating a discharge device (3) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for operating a discharge device.
