This sliding member is used as a sliding member inside a closed container where a lubricant is retained, the container being provided with a refrigerant compressor for compressing refrigerant. The sliding member has an oxide film formed on the front surface of a parent material. The oxide film has at least one of the following structures: (1) when the parent material is an iron material, a three-layer structure comprising, in order from the outermost layer, a first layer comprising Fe2O3, a second layer comprising Fe3O4, and a third layer comprising FeO; (2) a compact structure having small asperities, the difference between crests and valleys being 0.01 to 0.1 µm; or (3) when the parent material is an iron material, a three-layer structure containing ferric oxide and having varying hardness. |
