The method involves connecting electrical machine (10) with an intermediate circuit (20) through the power converter valves (21-26). The portion of the converter valves is closed for short-circuiting the electrical machine. The voltage in the intermediate circuit is compared with minimum limit value for the voltage in the intermediate circuit in order to open converter valves so as to drive the electrical machine. An independent claim is included for device for operating electrical machine.
