The method involves providing a rod-shaped substrate. An outer coating (3) i.e. fluorine-doped outer coating, is formed at a provided substrate (1a) in a horizontal installation position by a flame burner, a plasma burner and a smoker. Rounded corner regions (1b) are processed by grinding and polishing. Another outer coating is formed at a processed and coated substrate in the horizontal installation position for forming a preform. A core material doped with germanium is formed. Final circular grinding or corner grinding of the preform is carried out after forming the latter outer coating. An independent claim is also included for an optical fiber.
