PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic AF frame tracking system which eliminates troublesome operation to be performed when starting automatic AF frame tracking, and can be applied even to a compact camera, where it is spatially difficult to install an AF frame operation device, such as a handy camera. SOLUTION: A CPU 30 of an image processing unit 18 sets an AF frame at a prescribed position of a photographic image, discriminates whether a human face is included in a range of the AF frame, and instructs the start of the automatic AF frame tracking by a face detection tracking mode when the human face is included in the range of the AF frame, and instructs the start of the automatic AF frame tracking by an object tracking mode when the human face is not included therein.
