This invention relates to data encoding and decoding for an Industrial Process Control System. The invention provides an apparatus for industrial process control comprising a plurality of processor assemblies and a plurality of input/output assemblies in communication with one another and in which a first assembly transmitting data to a second assembly is arranged to include a checksum which is calculated using a seed which is uniquely dependent upon the source or destination input/output assembly.
