Classes 120(ii) and 120(iii) An automatic pirn winder is provided with a device for depositing on a pirn skewer board the pirns ejected by the winder, in which both the skewer board and a pirn ejection shoot are so connected via articulations to the frame of the winder that each of such units is pivotable about a stationary point. As shown, the shoot L and the skewer board H are mounted on the winder frame by universal joints and are so interconnected that pirns can be deposited successively on all the skewers without lateral movement of the board. A bracket 7 carrying shoot L is pivotable about an axis x 1 on a stirrup 3 which is itself pivotable on the machine frame about an axis y 1 at right angles to x 1 . Board H is carried on a frame 18 pivotable about an axis x 2 on a plate 14 which is itself pivotable on the machine frame about an axis y 2 at right angles to axis 17. Stirrup 3 is linked to plate 14 by a rod V 1 and bracket 7 to frame 14 by a rod V 2 , so that the shoot L and board H move simultaneously through equal angles about corresponding axes and shoot L always remains in alignment with the skewers. Cams 29, 32 operate respectively through follower levers 25, 36 (not shown) to rock the shoot about its two axes so that it comes in alignment successively with each of the skewers S on board H. Cam 29 is responsible for moving the shoot from row to row of the skewers, and cam 32 for moving it from skewer to skewer along each row. The cam surfaces are notched as at 33a so that the mouth of the shoot moves from skewer to skewer in a curved path which avoids the previously skewered pin. Cams 29, 32 are secured on the same shaft 28 as a ratchet wheel 53 which is advanced tooth by tooth by a pawl 62 operated by the control lever 58 of the winder gearbox at each pirn change. The number of teeth on ratchet wheel 53 is equal to the number of skewers on board H; after one revolution of wheel 53 all the skewers are full, and a feeler pawl 68 drops through a gap 69 in a ring 70 rotating with wheel 53, thereby causing a rod 76 to rise and operate the stop lever 78 of the winder. When the full skewer board has been replaced by an empty one, rod 76 is pressed down and the winder restarted by means of a control lever 57a.
