Preparation of monomethylhydrazine (MMH) comprises methylating hydrazine or hydrazinium hydro- or -dihydrochloride with methyl chloride and/or methanol/hydrochloric acid mixture, reacting the reaction mixture, resulting from the methylation, with an organic base having a pKa value of greater than 7 and a boiling point above 120[deg] C and separating, by distillation, MMH in a high boiling fraction from the reaction mixture, where the high boiling fraction is optionally subjected to further distillation.
