Method and apparatus for displaying files by categories in a graphical user interface

A method and computing device are provided for retrieval of stored data files. The files are categorized into a categories. At least two of the categories are displayed on the device display, each within a respective discrete display area of the display. A graphical representations of data files belonging to a category are displayed in the area of the corresponding category.
