Classes 20(iii) and 137 In mechanism for opening and closing pivoted windows, louvres, shutters or the like operated by a reciprocable flexible metal cable 24 having a multi-stranded core with or without one or more compression-transmitting lays wound thereon and which has on its exterior single or multi-start spaced helical projections, such cable being mounted in a fixed guiding conduit 21 which can be rectilinear or curved or both, one end of the cable is connected to the window e.g. 19 so that the cable axis is normal to the plane of the window &c. and the cable has the necessary strength and rigidty to act as a supporting stay for the window &c. in all open positions thereof. One main operating cable may operate one or more subordinate cables 39.
