The method involves calculating a total mass of oil residues (56) deposited in a particulate filter of an internal combustion engine by using speed and torque of a motor (6), temperature of water (8) and oil (10), a combustion mode of cylinders (12) and a reduction rate of ashes in the oil during a combustion process (22). Pressure difference (DP) in an exhaust line on both sides of the filter is measured after complete regeneration of the filter to determine drift of the difference in the line. Mass of estimated oil is determined from the difference to calculate mass of consumed oil. An independent claim is also included for a controller for management of a particle filter of an internal combustion engine.
